Ok, you’ve decided that you want to work for yourself – freelance consulting is for you!
Well done, you’re about to embark on an exciting and fulfilling journey, but starting out can be a challenge. The way you think about work will change forever. You will (at least initially) work harder than before, but you’ll have more flexibility than ever before, make more money than before (if you do a few basic things right), and ultimately be in control of your own destiny. You can’t ask for more than that, right?
If 2020 and a pandemic have taught us anything, it’s that nothing is certain, nothing is safe. I’ve been saying for the last decade that job security doesn’t exist, and that being an independent consultant is actually safer – because you are in control of your future. And you get good at finding work for yourself, rather than relying on the whims or performance of an employer.
So what are the first steps you need to take? How do you go about starting out your business as a freelance consultant? I will answer those questions and more, with posts covering the following topics:
- Why Should I Hire You?
- Fail to Plan and You Plan to Fail
- The Legal Stuff
- It’s All About Marketing!
- Branding and Image – Who Are You?
- Finding Work
I’ll also be sharing some practical tips, including:
- Optimising Your Workspace
- Time Management
- Project Management
- Money Management
- Personal SWOT Analysis
I also have a Resources page with links to (and reviews of) useful books, apps, websites, blogs, organisations, and anything else I think may be useful to you.
All of the references listed above will become live links as the articles are published, so feel free to bookmark this page as a handy reference in future.
Cheers
